The Chinese bamboo flute is also known as dizi. It has a record of more than 2000 years. Chinese bamboo flute is petite pipe, which is convenient. It is played by keeping it horizontal. A crystal clear and resonant sound is produced when it is played. The flute membrane, dimo, is fixed over the hole of the dimo in order to create its penetrating and unique tone. When it is played, the resonance from it is created due to the vibration of the air columns inside the Chinese bamboo flute.

Chinese bamboo flute has around ten holes on the normal key of C. The very first hole, which is situated at a distance compared to the other holes on the left end of the bamboo flute, is named as 'mouth hole'.

You need to put your lip, the lower one, at the rim of the hole for the mouth against the Chinese bamboo flute. You would need to blow air straight across the mouth hole.

The subsequent hole of the hole of the mouth is 'membrane hole’, which is also known as 'mo Kong'. It is the place where the membrane of the flute is stuck over the dimo hole in order to create its distinguished and bright timbre.

There are a few of the Chinese bamboo flute which can have joints of copper amid of the holes of the mouth and the membrane. If you twist the tuning outwards of the joint of copper, it would make the pitch go flat. Then again, if you wind up the tuning inwards of the copper joint, then it would make the pitch sharp. You need to twist the Dizi apart rather than pulling it, as you might cause harm to the joint of copper.

The Dizi has six more holes on it besides the two holes of mouth and membrane. These six holes are known as finger holes. Two holes, which are at the very end of the bamboo flute, operate as the air vents. Their function is to influence the pitching of the Dizi on the whole, but if you are an amateur, you can let them be alone by their own.

If you have the bamboo flute in the C key and covering three of the holes, then the resulting sound would give you a note of C. if you have the bamboo flute in the C key and covering all the holes, then the resulting sound would give you a note of G. There is nothing to be confused about all these. Once you start playing, you will learn all the techniques and system. It is just a matter of time.

The Chinese bamboo flute or Dizi is an amazing sounding instrument. Once you start playing it, you will definitely fall in love with it.
